Canada Pump and Power of Ardrossan, Alberta is vying for the award alongside companies working in medical technology, electronics, brewing, plastics and more.

The award, sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the national accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP, recognizes private Canadian businesses with remarkable achievements in strategic and sustainable growth. The winner will be announced at a gala in Toronto on Nov. 14.

CPP is a long-time member of the Canadian Association of Diving Contractors. The company adheres to the CADC standards, advertises, and encourage others to join the CADC.

“It is nice for a commercial diving company to receive national recognition,” said CPP’s CEO Jeremy Leonard. “I think this illustrates that playing by the rules is the right thing to do. I do not think companies that cut corners and do not belong to and support the industry via the CADC are on the correct path for success.”

Canada Pump and Power, founded in 2010, provides innovative solutions in diving, dredging and pumping. Although diving represents just a small percentage of the company’s overall revenue, CPP employs five full-time divers and hires others on as needed. Mr. Leonard started his business journey in Fort McMurray, Alberta in 1979 when he became a commercial diver and formed the first commercial diving firm in that area.

The Private Business Growth Award finalist nomination recognizes CPP’s emphasis on safety, innovation and R&D, including its development of the award-winning Mighty Dredge, the world’s first autonomous dredge. In addition to its ongoing work in Alberta, CPP has operations in Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Hawaii and Brazil.

UPDATE: Canada Pump and Power narrowly lost out to another nominee.
